to an extent they do however its better to have a few lessons first to eradicate the sllice because if you done that after having an offset driver you will tend to hook it as the face is so closed , why not try Taylor Made R9 as you can open and close the face change lie angles etc at the turn of a wrench so it adapts with you as you get better

A little tip i use which is legal is use trainer dubbin on your face because it preserves the quality of the club whilst adding a little spin.

Question
what driver should i buy?
At the monment i have the callaway diablo "draw" driver with a 10 degree loft. I find it very strange to set up as the face is set at an angle (draw). i have a very low hook and cannot get the ball up in the air!!! i think its my swing as i strugle to get other woods up off the tee. i play off af 16 and i'm looking for a mid priced quality driver. what models should i be looking at?? Or should i just learn to hit the driver i'v got. :)

Try an 11.5 degree loft, that will get the ball in the air. Check the shaft and make sure it is the right one for you. I made the mistake of using a stff flex, only to be told by the pro that I did not have fast swing and the stiff flex was making my slice worse as the shaft was not flexing before striking the ball.

i recomend the cobra s9-1 as it has 9 sweetspots so it has a more accurat shot. also you hook it as you must have an neutral swing and because your driver is set to draw it will hook. but if you brought the neutral one you will be able to hit straight and more height.
hope this helps :D

Well I would say that you should save yourself some money and try out different techniques with your driver. However if you can never hit this club straight, exchange it for a new diablo driver which are priced at £129 but you would get discount due to trading in a driver

I was in a similar our position a year or so ago and bought the Nike Sasquatch Sumo2 driver for £99 brand new but was now last seasons model. With a square head it gives a straighter if slightly shorter drive but was very easy to handle. My advice would be to go to a large golf store with a driving range, tell them what you are looking for and they will let you try a range of drivers out for free and give you advice to make an informed decision.

I need a driver that will launch the ball at a low trajectory, which model drivers should I look at?

you must be in a minority as most drivers these days strive to get a high launch low spin type configuration.
the best way to get a low trajectory is to go onto a trackman launch monitor and get a shaft that has a kickpoint to keep flight down, but unless you play on a windy links type course your losing so much distance
good luck

If it's your first driver I would go for a Ping G10 or G15 but you might have to go second hand. i got a second hand G10 as my first driver recently and find it easy to use. personally I think it's better to go second hand then if you find you don't get on with it you can sell it on.

Question
what clubs/irons next?
i'm 50, joined aclub 3 years ago, remain off 28. the course is very narrow and wooded so elsewhere I can get on ok. I bought a set of Williamson starter clubs about 4 years ago from yourselves which have been great , but what next? my main failing is a slice and/or "topping" the ball

Stan before you purchase its maybe an idea to get a few lessons to stop topping etc as new clubs wont fix that. apart from that, if your getting new clubs make sure you get fitted as it makes a real difference

Hi Stan,

I am going to work under the presumption that it is a full set of golf clubs that you would be looking to buy.

It is important for you to get something which is designed to be forgiving. If you play a narrow, wooded course the last thing you want is to be finding yourself stuck behind trees and buried in the rough because your clubs can’t control your miss-hits well enough to keep you in play.

In terms of irons I would make sure that I was buying something with a cavity back and lots of perimeter weighting so that you don’t have to be on top ball-striking form to hit the ball straight and accurately. It is difficult for me to recommend exactly which shaft would be best suited to you without any more information from yourself, but a regular graphite shaft could definitely be a good option for you.

As far as Woods go, again, make sure that they are designed to help you hit fairways; something with a square head could definitely be beneficial as the whole principle of the head design is so that you can keep the ball straight much easier than normal.

It is hard for me to recommend specific club options for you without knowing your budgets and club preferences, if you would like some further help choosing a set, drop us an email at sales@americangolf.co.uk FAO Julian, and I’ll get back in contact with you.

Hope this helps!

Taylor Made R9 460 or Ping G10/15 get custom fitted and if they suggest a higher loft than you think you need leave the ego in the house and go for the suggested loft, my mate had a 9.5 burner and was all over the place he was custom fitted with a nike sumo on a 13 degree loft, never misses a fairway and his distsnce has increased also. its down to personal preference but i would say the shaft fit is critical cobra also do a great range of forgiving "bombers"

Question
Golf club sets
We (me and my wife) have recently started playing golf and interested in buying two completes sets.

Could you recommend any set? Mind you we are looking for the set which can be used for a long time (at least couple of years) and give away as gift ?

Not very expensive but branded sets if possible?

Hi there,

Glad to hear that you have taken up the game!

Here are my two recommendations for you and your wife going off the information provided:

For yourself, I would go for one of these two package set options – (Just copy and paste the link into your browser to see them)

http://www.americangolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/golf-package-sets/wilson-deep-red-mens-right-handed-package-set/

If this isn’t pushing your budget too much it would be a good choice for you. It is designed to be very forgiving which means that you don’t have to hit the ball out of the middle of the club to get good performance, you can hit the toe or the heel and the ball will still fly like it has been struck well.

This comes in especially handy for players like you who are learning the game, the extra forgiveness will mean that you can still go out and play decent golf whilst you are getting to grips with the swing.

Wilson have been one of the leading manufacturers of Golf clubs for decades, the set will last for a very long time as long as it is looked after properly and it will still be regarded as a good set when you decide to give it away as a gift.

The next option down from this would be this - http://www.americangolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/golf-package-sets/wilson-ultra-dcg-package-set/ .

There are slightly fewer clubs in the set than the Deep Red package, but it is still a full set.

Again, it is designed to be very forgiving, ideal for a beginner.

As for your wife, the first option which I would recommend is this - http://www.americangolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/golf-package-sets/golden-bear-ld-5-0-3graphite-woods-1-graphite-hybrids-6-graphite-irons-ladies-cart-bag-package-set/ .

The set has been designed so that it is ideal to suit ladies who are learning the game; once again it is very easy to use and will still suit her game when she progresses. It will give her everything she needs to develop her game to a good standard.

The second option which I would recommend is the ladies version of the Ultra DCG set which I linked you to earlier - http://www.americangolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/golf-package-sets/wilson-ultra-dcg-package-set/ .

If you would like to speak to me further about selecting a set, feel free to drop me an email at sales@americangolf.co.uk – FAO Julian.

Hope this helps!
